    Vehicle Overview

Compared to the previous generation, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in the W221 guise represented a paradigm shift in design, technology, luxury features, and even size. While the W220 went a step backward compared to the giant W140 in size, the W221 was a larger car in every respect, returning to the traditional ways of making a luxury sedan. Corroborated with a more muscular and aggressive stance, the model signaled its top spot in the Mercedes-Benz lineup in a more striking yet subtle fashion.

Unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as a 2006 model on all markets, the W221 S-Class introduced a radical styling transformation compared to its W220 predecessor. It delivered a mix of opulence given by the massive size and a more aggressive stance thanks to the pronounced wheel arches and the more upright, commanding grille.

The front end was slightly more inconspicuous than its rivals. Still, the chrome accents, large size, and almost perfect sedan proportions gave it a nearly regal presence. At the same time, the smoother design lines made it seem more agile than its large size would suggest. While the oversized wheel arches dominated the side profile, the model’s rear was highlighted by more refined curves and sweeping taillights similar to those found on the much larger Maybach 57 and 62.

As with most other S-Class generations, the magic happened inside. The cabin was drenched in high-quality materials, including fine leather, wood accents, and brushed aluminum trim. Particular attention was spent on noise insulation, with the W221 having the quietest interior in its segment. The front seats had multiple electric adjustments, heating and ventilation, and even a massage function. At the same time, the rear passengers could be pampered by amenities similar to those available in first-class-style seats.

As it had become traditional, avant-garde technology was present on the top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz model, with the Comand infotainment system providing centralized navigation control, audio, and improved climate settings. Speaking of the innovative multi-zone climate control, it even used sensors to determine the angle of the sun rays hitting the car.

Safety-wise, the W221 S-Class was arguably the safest car in its segment thanks to the improved Pre-Safe system, which used radar-based technology to detect potential collisions and take preventive measures, such as automatically closing the windows, tightening seat belts and adjusting seats for crash protection.

Another premiere for Mercedes-Benz, in general, was represented by the Night View Assist system, which used infrared technology to improve safety and visibility during nighttime driving. The improved Airmatic suspension system catered to both comfort and dynamics thanks to the myriad of automatically adaptable settings, depending on driver preference. The Active Body Control system was optionally available on lesser models or standard on the top-of-the-range version.

The engine lineup comprised a range of powertrains, from a naturally aspirated V6 in the entry-level S 350 to the mighty, twin-turbocharged V12 in the S 600. Apart from the S 600 and S 65 AMG, all models delivered power to either the rear or all wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. The two V12-powered models still featured the more torque-resistant 5G-Tronic.
