    Vehicle Overview

While the first-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class had short and long versions, the second generation only had one, encompassing the best features and thus streamlining production. That said, the W169 was the first and, so far, the only generation of the A-Class to feature a three-door variant.

Officially known as the A-Class Coupe, the three-door version of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class W169 was introduced to bring a sporty, more youthful twist to the otherwise somewhat boring-looking lineup. Despite missing the rear doors, the model maintained most of the practicality and innovative design features of the five-door version while offering a more dynamic and, say, stylish option for drivers seeking a compact, practical car with a touch of flair.

The reduction in door count gave it a sleeker, more streamlined profile, which was also helped by the remaining doors being made longer than on the five-door variant. Technically, the two models were entirely identical, except for this aesthetic and practical difference, but it was enough for people to consider the Coupe as the ‘driver’s A-Class.’

Like the five-door version, the unique sandwich floor was a key design element for the A-Class Coupe. This engineering innovation not only enhanced crash safety by sending the tilted engine and transmission beneath the passenger compartment in the event of a frontal impact but also contributed to a lower center of gravity for the otherwise tall car.

In addition, the double floor and extremely short overhangs improved the model’s handling and stability, making it feel more planted during hard cornering. Another conclusion to this design was that the high seating position provided better visibility and a commanding view of the road, and the high sills improved side impact protection.

The minivan-like exterior design of the five-door version transformed into a much sleeker look thanks to the gently sloping roofline of the Coupe, which tapered even more toward the rear, like on a real sports coupe.

Despite decent access thanks to the elongated doors, the Coupe was definitely less practical than its five-door brother inside. This was all because of the more sloping roof and lack of rear doors. With that in mind, the rear seats could be folded similarly, substantially increasing the luggage compartment.

The engine lineup was shared since the design was the only difference between the Coupe and the regular A-Class. The powertrain list consisted of gasoline and diesel four-cylinders, with displacement ranging from 1.5 liters to 2.0 liters. The gasoline models were all naturally aspirated, safe for the top-of-the-range version, which was turbocharged.

All engines sent their power exclusively to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual on the entry-level models or a 6-speed manual on the others. A continuous variable transmission (CVT) was offered as an option called Autotronic.

All the comfort features present as standard or as an option for the five-door model were available on the A-Class Coupe as well, including the latest Command infotainment system, full-size retractable sunroof, heated seats, and manual or automatic climate control.
