Lincoln introduced the third generation of the Navigator full-size SUV at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show, offering it in a short or a long wheelbase configuration, where the latter version was known as the Navigator L.
Few vehicles could challenge the mighty 2007 Lincoln Navigator L on the road. The luxurious full-size SUV built on the same platform as the Ford Expedition was the vehicle that started the challenge for deep-pocket customers in the segment. Lincoln offered all the features and amenities of a luxurious sedan but in a vehicle with a higher ground clearance. Furthermore, those looking for more comfort on the second row of seats could get the big SUV in a six-seat configuration. In addition, the technological package included a 600-watt sound system that transformed the full-size SUV into a club on wheels.
At the front, the commanding look of the 2007 Lincoln Navigator L was second to none. The automaker understood that the previously used waterfall grille was a little behind in terms of design. As a result, Lincoln adopted a new styling that featured a broad grille with horizontal slats where the carmaker’s badge took center stage. However, these were not the only elements that made the Navigator L impressive. The entire front fascia continued with a pair of rectangular HID headlights and a wrapped-around bumper adorned by a chromed trim. In addition, in the apron, the automaker installed standard round fog lamps.
The 2007 Lincoln Navigator L had a 12-inch (30.5 cm) longer wheelbase than its non-L sibling. The automaker made this version for those looking for more comfort on the second row of seats. However, it had to also lengthen the rear doors, easing access to the rear seats. Furthermore, the rearmost windows placed between the C- and D-pillars were also wider. Like its non-L sibling, the extended wheelbase version of the 2007 Navigator featured fixed running boards, while a set of power-retractable ones were available. Out back, the broad tailgate was power-operated and flanked on its lower area by the corner-mounted taillights. Furthermore, customers could also open just the rear windshield for easier loading and unloading of small items.
Inside, the automaker created a luxurious cabin. The 2007 Lincoln Navigator L had a dashboard clearly divided into three sections. The one fronting the driver had an instrument panel filled with large dials for the speedometer and tachometer, while above them were the gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, ammeter, and oil pressure. All versions of this full-size SUV had a leather-wrapped interior. While the driver fronted the instrument panel, the side passenger faced a glovebox. On the center stack, Lincoln installed a 600-watt sound system that transformed the full-size SUV into a club on wheels. In addition, the automaker offered an option for a DVD-based GPS unit. The middle row was probably the most important in the vehicle. Thanks to the enlarged wheelbase, customers seated there were the ones that got all the comfort features ever installed in a full-size SUV.
Under the hood, the 2006 Lincoln Navigator L came with the same engine as its non-L sibling. It was a 5.4-liter V8 that developed 300 hp (304 PS), which it sent to a six-speed automatic transmission. Lincoln offered the car with either a rear- or an all-wheel-drive system. The automaker noticed that a two-speed transfer case wasn’t on the list for its customers, so it ditched that in favor of a single-speed one. A trailer package was also available, which helped the full-size SUV tow up to 8,700 lbs. (3,956 kg) in the 2WD configuration and 8,500 (3,856 kg) for the 4×4 version.
