Volvo unveiled the CrossCountry version of the V90 large station wagon at the 2016 Paris Motor Show and combined the luxury vehicle with a slight off-road ability.

When the carmaker introduced the first generation of the XC70 in 1996, it addressed the car to families who enjoyed spending their free time on unpaved roads. The saga continued with a second-generation, but Volvo noticed that its customers asked for more. With financial help from its new owners, the Chinese carmaker Geely Holding Group managed to create a CrossCountry version for the regular V90 model.

While it shared most of its body panels with the standard S90, the CrossCountry version featured a silver shield under the front bumper and engine compartment. From its sides, the black plastic moldings on the fenders enhanced the off-road look of the vehicle and concealed the gap between the wheels and the wheel arches. Its ground clearance was higher than on the regular version and reached 21 cm (8.3″). The car featured a black-painted lower bumper area in the back, so the scratches from bushes or gravel wouldn’t spoil the car’s look.

Inside, the V90 CrossCountry offered less cargo area than on the car it replaced, the XC70. But that was not an issue for the Swedish carmaker as long as it still provided plenty of it. Its five-seat interior offered loads of legroom for the rear passengers, while the front occupants were granted an excellent level of comfort as well.

Volvo offered the XC90 with a choice of gasoline or diesel engine, all turbocharged. The carmaker paired them with automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive.
