Audi introduced the A3 lineup in 1996, offering a compact-sized vehicle for the premium segment and redefining the hot-hatch term.

Three years later, in 1999, the German automaker from Ingolstadt came with the S3 version. Since the A3 was based on the same platform as the first-generation Audi TT, it means that it could take some parts from that coupe.

The car’s front fascia was more aggressive than the rest of the A3 range. It featured clear-lense headlights and a chromed trim around the main grille that also sported a small red and silver badge with the S3 inscription. Audi placed a broad air intake on the lower bumper that also housed the fog lamps, which were fitted as standard. From its sides, the S3-exclusive six-spoke light-alloy wheels enhanced the car’s look. Finally, at the back, the automaker placed a roof spoiler on top of the tailgate, and peaking under the bumper was a twin exhaust.

Inside, the automaker installed high-bolstered bucket seats at the front with S3 lettering embroidered on their seatbacks. As an option, customers could get a mix of leather and Alcantara upholstery. The instrument cluster featured the same dials as in the rest of the A3 range, but in this case, the speedometer sported the S3 logo on it.

Under the hood was the same turbocharged 1.8-liter, 20-valve engine. That’s not a mistake; it featured five valves per cylinder. It produced 210 PS and sent its power in all corners via a six-speed manual and a Haldex-based quattro system.
