Vehicle Overview

After the marriage between Chrysler and Fiat, the Italian company started to sell the Dodge Journey in Europe under the name Fiat Freemont. It was launched in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show.

When it comes to minivans, American brands had the biggest experience. The European car-makers were shy about that area. Renault started the compact MPV segment in the ’80s and other companies joined on the way. But still, the U.S. brands were far more advanced in terms of interior features and seat layout. Fiat used to have an MPV lineup built together with the French group PSA. After the Italians merged with Chrysler, they put the Fiat badge on a Dodge Journey and changed the engines.

On the outside, the look of the vehicle was simple, with a two-box design and a short front end. The cabin was long and ended into a flat rear tailgate. It featured regular, front-hinged four doors to access the cabin. The seven-seat configuration was available as an option.

Inside, the Freemont was large enough. Two adult-sized passengers could fit in the last row. For the driver, there was a simple dashboard design, with two round dials and a small LCD between them. An infotainment unit was placed on the center stack.

Under the hood, the Freemont featured either a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel unit or 3.6-liter V6 gasoline. Unlike the Dodge Journey, which used the VW 2.0-TDI unit, the Fiat Freemont used a newly developed Fiat-sourced unit with the same performance. It was available with either 140hp or 170 hp, in front- or all-wheel-drive.
