    Vehicle Overview

Chevrolet refreshed the fourth generation of the Camaro for the 1998 model year, and along with the entire lineup, it upgraded the Z28 Convertible version as well.

While at first sight, there were just minor aesthetical updates for the fourth generation of the Camaro, the automaker actually improved the vehicle with numerous technical updates. One of the most significant improvements was for the Z28 and the Super Sport versions, which received a new engine, transmission, and driveshaft. Furthermore, the automaker took into account the high demand for drop-top versions powered by V8 engines, so it kept the Camaro Z28 Convertible in the lineup, although dramatically improved in all areas.

At the front, the refreshed version lost the charismatic recessed quad-headlight design that made the fourth generation of the Camaro famous. Instead, it adopted a new dual-headlamp design flush with the bodywork. Furthermore, the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 had a redesigned front bumper with a pinned-out mid-section, resembling the 1974 Camaro. The broad grille installed in the air dam featured two horizontal slats and was flanked by the turn signal lamps and the lower side scoops that housed the fog lamps.

With its aerodynamic profile, the 1998 Camaro Z28 Convertible distinguished itself from its lesser-powered sibling thanks to the Z28 decals placed on the front fenders. In addition, it sported specific five-spoke alloy wheels, with an option for chromed aluminum ones, offered exclusively for this V8-powered version. The standard hood was just slightly curved and was not adorned by a forced induction system, albeit that was available along with the Sport Appearance Package. However, even without that, it was a good-looking boulevard cruiser. The body-colored flush door handles added more charisma to the vehicle, while the wing on the trunk that sat lower than the one offered on the SS version was the correct detail for a sporty-looking convertible.

Inside, customers found the same bucket seats at the front with tall seatbacks and integrated headrests as on the non-facelifted version. However, the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Convertible was available with leather seats for both rows. The deep-sculptured bench seat for two in the back provided enough side support for those seated there. Unfortunately, legroom was limited since the automaker had to push the bench slightly forward to make room for the retractable canopy that was neatly stored between the cabin and the trunk.

Under its skin, the 1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Convertible received significant improvements. The automaker replaced the former LT1 powerhouse with its cast-iron engine block with a lighter, Corvette-derived LS1 V8 powerplant that used an aluminum engine block. In addition, the automaker offered the new 4L60-E four-speed automatic gearbox as standard, but the Borg-Warner T56 six-speed manual transmission was a no-cost option for those craving a three-pedal setup. In addition, the driveshaft was lighter since it was made from aluminum instead of cast-iron.
