In the autumn of 2024, Cupra launched the compact crossover Terramar for the European market, targeting customers looking for a sportier family SUV.
In 2018, Cupra was introduced as a brand under the Volkswagen Group umbrella. It was a fresh start, albeit based on a nameplate previously used by the Spanish automaker SEAT for its sportiest vehicles. The launch of this car manufacturer was made at the historic race track Autodrom de Sitges-Terramar, hence the 2024 Cupra Terramar nameplate. Cupra made the vehicle based on the same underpinnings as the Volkswagen Tiguan and assembled it on the same production line as the Audi Q3 in Hungary. With this vehicle, the automaker attacked a new market segment and had high hopes for it.
The 2024 Cupra Terramar boasted a front fascia that resembled a shark nose, with a slightly longer, angular-shaped upper section. In addition, the automaker installed Matrix LED headlights with triangular-shaped blocks as a lighting signature daytime running lights. The tall and broad wrapped-around plastic front bumper integrated a broad hexagonal grille flanked by the side scoops for the air curtains that also integrated the fog lamps on their upper side. Lower, in the middle, the car manufacturer placed the rectangular radar for the advanced safety systems.
The 2024 Cupra Terramar had a typical profile for a crossover, with tall door panels and fenders that formed an ascending waistline. In addition, the automaker placed sharp lines on the upper area, emphasizing the enlarged rear quarter panels. At the same time, the sculptured door panels boasted a check-mark-like sharp line that added more drama to the car’s entire design. Cupra offered the vehicle with standard alloy wheels across the range, and among other options, sets with copper accents on the spokes were available. Out back, a roof spoiler adorned the rear windshield integrated into the broad tailgate. Cupra had already created other vehicles with taillights extended from side to side, across the tailgate, and the Terramar followed that idea. In addition, customers could get the vehicle with a red luminescent badge in the middle of the tailgate, below the rear window.
Inside, the car manufacturer created a sporty ambiance for its customers. The door panels were covered in soft materials and sported integrated LED dots that discretely illuminated the interior. Like its stablemates, the 2024 Cupra Terramar featured high-seatback bucket seats with integrated headrests covered in fabric, microfiber, or a mix of man-made and genuine leather. Fronting the driver was a TFT instrument panel, while atop the center stack, the automaker placed the touchscreen for the infotainment system. Between the front passengers, the Terramar had a center console that housed a couple of cup holders and the parking brake button. The gear selector was no longer there since the automaker moved it behind the steering wheel, on a stack. Out back, the Spanish crossover built in Hungary had a 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat that could accommodate three passengers.
At the sales start, the 2024 Cupra Terramar was available with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. They ranged between 150 PS (148 hp) and 265 PS (261 hp) and were paired with either a six- or a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The lowest two versions were fitted as standard with front-wheel drive, while the most potent one sent its power in all corners via an electronically controlled all-wheel drive system.
