    Vehicle Overview

Hyundai made another significant step towards its electrification program and introduced the plug-in version of the Sonata at the 2015 North American International Auto Show for the 2016 model year.

The seventh generation of the Sonata was unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show, but its range consisted, initially, only of gasoline-powered versions. In the following year, in Detroit, the Korean brand made a decisive step forward when it showed the plug-in hybrid version of the car, a vehicle that could run on electrons alone and also boasted impressive fuel efficiency for its segment.

Like the previous generation, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid had a different exterior styling than its ICE-only powered siblings. Its front fascia had a taller and more vertical grille than its gas-powered brothers. The headlights were also unique to the Plug-in Hybrid, featuring HID lamps on the outer sides instead of in the middle. Furthermore, lower on the bumper, the automaker placed a different apron that showed a slimmer lower air intake. The side scoops that flanked it housed the daytime running lights made from eight LEDs (seven for its non-hybrid stablemates).

From its profile, there were other details that let bystanders recognize the hybrid from the non-hybrid versions. Firstly, the front fenders were adorned by the “blue hybrid” badges, unique to the model. Hyundai also installed specific wheels for the hybrid version of the Sonata. They had a fan-like pattern that enhanced aerodynamics. However, one of the most significant differences was at the back. There, the automaker put different taillights with clear lenses on the lower side. Furthermore, there was no visible tailpipe, whereas the gas-powered Sonata had a dual-exhaust system.

Hyundai didn’t bother too much to improve the cabin of the 2016 Sonata Plug-in Hybrid compared to its gas-powered 2015 model year. It featured leather upholstery and a standard five-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system placed atop the center stack. The instrument panel that fronted the driver had different graphics for the small display for the car’s onboard computer, and the car played a specific chine when it was started. A panoramic glass roof and a larger, eight-inch display for the navigation unit were available at extra cost. Legroom and headroom were identical to its non-hybrid sibling. There was also a difference in storage space. The hybrid had a smaller one due to the 9.8 kWh lithium polymer battery pack installed under the trunk’s floor. However, it was still large enough for its segment.

Under the hood, Hyundai installed a naturally aspirated two-liter engine that produced 156 PS (154 hp). It was helped by a 30 kW (68 hp) motor for a total output of 205 PS (202 hp) and was paired with a standard six-speed automatic transmission.
