    Vehicle Overview

Hyundai was closing the gap to its main competitors with the fifth generation of the Sonata, a vehicle that had already had all the attributes to become a serious contender in the mid-size sedan segment.

The Korean automaker introduced a new generation of the Sonata in 2004 in its home country, and it was later launched in other markets. It was also produced in the U.S. at Hyundai’s factory in Montgomery, Alabama, and unveiled in 2005 as a 2006 model year. The design was a revolution compared with its predecessor, and the drivetrain was vastly improved. Hyundai worked hard to become a more affordable alternative to other sedans, such as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. The automaker promised a more comfortable ride and better features than its main rivals, and all of these at a more affordable price.

At the front, the 2006 Hyundai Sonata came with a new-edge design styling, sporting rectangular headlights with clear lenses and corner-mounted turn signals. The main grille lost the chromed vertical slats from the previous generation and featured only a horizontal one that supported the brand’s badge. On the lower side of the wrapped-around bumper, the car manufacturer installed a second air intake with a reversed trapezoidal shape, flanked by the side scoops for the available fog lamps.

From its profile, the fifth generation of the Sonata revealed a dynamic look, with an ascending creased line that created a visual connection between the headlights and the taillights. Below that, the automaker placed the grab handles for the doors, while a chromed trim decorated the window line above it. The smooth lines of the greenhouse were emphasized by a few sharp corners and black B-posts. To further emphasize the vehicle’s elegant look, Hyundai also installed standard body-colored door handles and mirrors and added alloy wheels across the range. In the back, the taillights’ shape echoed the headlights.

Inside, thanks to its wheelbase of 107.4 inches (2,731 mm), the automaker could provide plenty of room for a family of five. At the front, the 2006 Hyundai Sonata provided more legroom than most mid-size sedans on the market, and the equipment was rich. Its curved dashboard with smooth lines was appreciated by customers. In addition, all grades came fitted with a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel. Atop the center stack, Hyundai put a CD stereo with MP3 compatibility. Base versions came fitted with cloth upholstery, while the top trim level, the GLS, was available with a leather-wrapped interior. In the back, the automaker installed a 60/40 split-folding bench seat where three adults could sit. However, the center tunnel limited legroom for the one seated in the middle.

Under the hood, Hyundai offered a choice of gasoline engines for the U.S. market, while in other countries a turbodiesel was also available. Power went to the front wheels only via a five-speed manual gearbox, while an automatic transmission was available at extra cost.
