    Vehicle Overview

In late 2004, Opel unveiled the station wagon version of the Opel Astra in Europe, a car that quickly followed its five-door hatchback stablemate and reached the Australian shores as the Holden Astra Wagon.

After successfully introducing the fifth generation of the Astra as a five-door hatchback, Holden challenged its competitors with a station wagon version of this model. Like its stablemate, the family-oriented car was built in Belgium and shipped to Australia wearing the Holden badge. The vehicle was a revolution in terms of styling and features compared to its predecessor. It was larger, had more potent engines, was better equipped inside, and was available with advanced safety systems. Unlike the five-door hatchback or the three-door coupe versions, the station wagon, traditionally called the Wagon in Holden’s language, was better suited for families thanks to its large trunk despite the car’s compact sizes.

At the front, the 2005 Holden Astra Caravan followed the same design language as the rest of the Opel range. It featured rhomboidal-shaped, swept-back headlights. They flanked a grille adorned by a body-colored slat, which was replaced by a chromed one in 2006. Holden offered the car in two grades, one less than the hatchback and the Coupe: CD and CDX. The higher version featured a pair of fog lamps on the lower side of the bumper, mounted on the side scoops that flanked the center air intake.

From its profile, the car boasted its flared wheel arches on both ends, creating a sporty image for the vehicle, even though it was just a regular, long-roof version of a compact-sized hatchback. Nevertheless, at 4,515 mm (177.8 in.), it was the longest member of the 2005 Holden Astra family. The base version came fitted with standard 15-inch steel wheels, while the CDX grade featured 16-inch alloy ones. Its body-colored door handles were standard, but the heated mirrors with color-keyed caps were an option. GM didn’t cheap out when it made the estate version, and the rear doors were unique to this body version. At the back, the corner-mounted taillights flanked the tailgate on its mid-section, which could open wide and tall, cutting part of the bumper placed below.

Inside, everything was neatly arranged in a minimalistic design trend. The curved two-tone dashboard had a center stack that housed the HVAC control panel and the stereo. As an option, customers could have the car fitted with a navigation system that featured a color screen. At the same time, the three-spoke steering wheel framed a three-dial instrument panel with a large speedometer and tachometer and a smaller gauge for the fuel level. In addition, the automaker put an LCD that showed other data from the car’s onboard computer. The driver and their side passenger sat on mildly bolstered bucket seats covered in cloth, while those seated in the back could enjoy enough headroom and legroom, thanks to the long roof.

While potent engines powered its five-door sibling and the three-door Coupe, the 2005 Holden Astra Caravan was available with more fuel-efficient gasoline engines. At the sales start, both grades were powered by the same 1.8-liter inline-four powerhouse. This sent the oomph to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission with an option for a four-speed automatic gearbox.
