Smart introduced the #5 model in its lineup in late August 2024 for the 2025 model year, expanding the all-electric lineup of the car manufacturer with an SUV that combined off-road performance with city-oriented abilities.

After Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese auto giant Geely inked a deal about the Smart brand, the newly formed joint venture went full-steam ahead in the development of EV-only vehicles. As a result, in 2022 and 2023, the automaker launched the #1 and the #3 models, respectively. While those were more city-oriented cars, the #5 tried to break new ground and entered the crossover territory, trying to provide customers with a premium SUV experience along with a high level of versatility. The 2025 Smart #5 was styled by Mercedes-Benz integrated advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) and was built on an 800-volt platform that promised a 740 km (460 miles) range, according to the CLTC (Chinese standards).

The car had a front styling that didn’t match the design language of the previous models offered by Smart, the #1 and the #3. It had a set of vertical headlights that went downward towards the side scoops and sported two horizontal LED daytime running lights. In addition, the automaker added a horizontal stripe above the front panel that created a visual connection between the headlamps. A set of four LED blocks created a line of dents, improving the vehicle’s look. At the same time, Smart added a grille that sported a hexagonal pattern and a contrasting color on the lower side of the bumper.

From its profile, the 2025 Smart #5 boasted a crossover look enhanced by black plastic moldings around the wheel arches. In addition, the lower side of the doors featured silver plastic trims that created the illusion of side steps, even though those weren’t needed due to the car’s low entry height. However, the steep windshield and the tall greenhouse were typical for an off-road vehicle. Smart even adorned it with a set of roof rails. Behind the rear doors, the #5 had an additional set of windows that improved visibility and made the D-post that sported the Smart logo look slimmer. The car manufacturer also said that it would enhance the car’s city-oriented profile by adding frameless doors, which were an uncommon design feature in the crossover segment. Finally, at the back, the automaker created a set of taillights that echoed the headlights due to their two red LED lines and four red blocks mounted on the tailgate below a light stripe.

Thanks to the long wheelbase of 2.9 meters (1,142 inches), the crossover provided a spacious cabin fit for five adults. Fronting the driver was a slim 10.3-inch instrument panel, while a pair of 13-inch displays covered the rest of the dashboard. In addition, a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display showed additional data for the one behind the wheel. Between the front seats, a wide center console with a storage compartment and two cup holders ensured customers that they had enough room. Furthermore, the rear seats provided 156 mm (6.2-inch) legroom, which was excellent for any vehicle. As for storage space, the 2025 Smart #5 provided a 72 l (2.5 cu-ft.) frunk and a 1,530 maximum trunk space (54 cu-ft.)

At the time of its launch, the automaker didn’t announce any motor specifications. However, they stated that the 100 kWh battery pack could be charged from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes, thanks to a super-charging system named 4C. The all-wheel drive versions had various driving modes, including Adaptive, Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock.
