Designed as a top-spec version of the Cordoba range, the Cupra was the car that tried to start a trend for small-sized performance coupes in Europe.

Europe has invented the hot-hatch segment, and the Spanish automaker SEAT tried to convince customers that a small-sized sedan with a punchy engine might be a better idea. Moreover, it offered the Cordoba Cupra only with two doors, thus resembling similar sporty vehicles from the U.S. market. But, unfortunately, customers were reluctant to this concept and preferred the three- or five-door hatchbacks.

SEAT had already started to make a name for itself in the motorsports arena when it entered the World Rally Championship, but on the market, it could barely offer something unique. Thus, the Cordoba Cupra came to fill that gap. Moreover, the car showed its intentions with its bigger front bumper that sported a slatted lower grille in the apron. From its profile, the standard alloy wheels, body-colored door mirrors, and handles were unique for the Cupra version. Also notable was the aerodynamic package that included lower side sills and a wing on the trunk.

Inside, customers were greeted with a pair of high-bolstered bucket seats at the front and part-leather upholstery. Drivers were spoiled with a three-spoke Momo steering wheel and aluminum pedals. Moreover, the white dials and red needles in the instrument cluster amplified the sporty sensation offered by the car. In the back, the automaker installed a bench suitable for three people on short distances.

Under the hood, SEAT placed the same 1.8-liter turbocharged engine found on many other Volkswagen-Audi products. It sent its power to the front wheels via a five-speed manual.
