Four years after the introduction of the second generation of the Audi A6, the German automaker added a facelift for the entire lineup, including the station wagon named “Avant.”
The second generation of the A6 Avant debuted a year after its sedan sibling in 1998. The automaker kept the vehicles on the market with a 1,8-liter powerplant that was extensively used on most VW-Group vehicles. That led to lower production costs and helped the four-rings brand gain traction on the market. But the 150 ponies provided were not enough for the big station wagon.
First and foremost, the front fascia received an essential update. Thus, the 2001 A6 Avant featured new headlights with clear lenses for the headlights and a new design for the taillights. In addition, Audi introduced a new set of 17” light-alloy wheels.
On the inside, the 2002 A6 featured a revised interior. There was a sense of American luxury with the introduction of storage compartments in the doors, but it still needed a real pair of cup holders in the center console. The interior designers worked to improve the look with wood trim on the dashboard and door panels. Finally, the rear 60/40 split-folding bench increased the trunk size when lowered, from 455 liters (16 cu-ft) up to 1,590 liters (56.1 cu-ft).
For the drivetrain, the 2002 Audi A6 Avant received an upgraded powerplant. Its former 1.8-liter 20valves unit was replaced by a new 2.0-liter engine. Another significant change was in the 1.9-liter TDI unit, which gained more power.
