Four years after the introduction of the small-class Peugeot 206, the French car-maker introduced the SW version. A station-wagon with a trunk bigger than a compact-class hatchback.

The idea that a station-wagon was just a car needed to carry more stuff with the family was already outdated when the 206 was introduced to the market in 2002. Peugeot introduced the SW with features that could make the life on the road more pleasant and those features were unavailable on the regular 206. It also offered the car at an affordable price when compared to a compact-sized vehicle.

The SW retained the familiar feline face of any conventional 206 but from the door pillar back was completely restyled. An option for panoramic glass-roof was added and that increased the sensation of spaciousness in the car. The rear door handles were incorporated into the rear door pillars helping to keep the profile clean. The tailgate contained a rear window that could be independently opened and closed.

Inside, there was the same room for the front passengers, but more headroom for the rear passengers due to a longer roofline. The dashboard and the instrument cluster were carried-over from the hatchback version.

Under the hood, the 206 SW offered various engines, starting with a small 1.1-liter engine, and went on up to a very strong 2.0-liter turbo diesel unit. The standard transmission for the entire range was a 5-speed manual. A 4-speed automatic was offered on selected versions.
