    Vehicle Overview

Unveiled at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet (A209) was an interesting take on the mid-size premium convertible market. Just like its predecessor, the four-seat open-top model was positioned between segments, so it had no direct competitor.

Although based on the C-Class (W203) platform, it was slightly longer and featured amenities and engines borrowed from the E-Class (W211). In other words, it was neither a C-Class Coupe nor an E-Class Coupe, but it tried to play both markets. This came with advantages and some downsides, including the relatively limited legroom for the rear passengers. That said, the CLK Cabriolet (A209) was still roomier than its closest rival, the BMW 3 Series Cabriolet (E46).

The three-layered electric soft top could be operated either via the keyfob or a button on the center console at speeds up to 8 kph (5 mph). It took a relatively quick 20 seconds to fully open or close. Insulation from the elements was above average, and noise levels were surprisingly low when closed, which was a feature that set the CLK apart from many other convertibles at the time.

For the first year after its introduction, the model was assembled by Karmann, being the last complete car made by the coachbuilder before closing the facility in Osnabruck. From 2004 onward, production was moved to Bremen alongside the CLK (C209) Coupe.

Apart from the roof mechanism and the rear seats, the model was identical to its coupe brother, sharing most features and engines. Speaking of powertrains, the engine lineup consisted of a supercharged four-cylinder, two V6s, and a V8, with the 55 AMG model getting an even bigger V8. All of them sent their power to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission, save for the more powerful V6 and the V8, which only had the 5G-Tronic available.

Oddly enough, while the CLK Coupe had no less than three diesel engine options, the Cabriolet only featured gasoline powertrains, with the decision to also offer diesel being made on future Mercedes convertibles.

The car shared most of its design cues with the coupe version, including its distinctive twin-headlight design and graceful body lines. The model’s profile was defined by its fabric soft top, which added a touch of classic elegance. The CLK Cabrio maintained a smooth, coupe-like silhouette when the roof was up. With the roof down, up to four passengers could enjoy the freedom of open-top driving, albeit draft was an issue. The more modern Air-Cap and Air-Scarf systems hadn’t been introduced by Mercedes yet, but it was a similar experience in other convertibles of the time.

Thanks to the C-Class W203 platform, the CLK Cabriolet used a rack-and-pinion steering system instead of the recirculating ball design of its predecessor. Another plus was an aluminum rear multi-link suspension, improving handling and comfort. The model had many luxury features not usually seen in its segment, including standard automatic climate control, a high-quality sound system, and an optional navigation system.
