With a growing demand for crossover vehicles, Volkswagen has decided that it can do more than just research new vehicles and adapt its regular ones for the market.

After it made the CrossPolo, the German carmaker noticed that the customers were happy with that and offered a Cross version for the Touran. Thus, the Golf-based MPV received a well-deserved treatment, and it was unveiled at the 2006 Bologna Motor Show. Even though the Touran was no longer a new vehicle, since it was launched in 2003, the new version attracted some customers to it.

The CrossTouran shared the main bodywork with the Touran, but there were few differences between them. For starters, the front bumper was redesigned and received a Touareg-inspired trim that surrounded the grille and then went down to the apron. A set of black plastic cladding adorned the lower bumper, the side sills, and the doors, representing protective areas for scratches and bumps. They proved to be useful mostly against shopping carts, though. The ground clearance was higher by 12 mm (0.5″) compared to the regular Touran and was concealed by additional black unpainted plastic elements fitted around the wheel arches.

Inside, the carmaker tried to impress its customers with unique upholstery colors, including a vivid orange that couldn’t be ordered on its mundane sibling. Depending on the options, Volkswagen included the Discover Pro infotainment system placed on the center stack. Like its sibling, it was available either with five or seven seats.

Under the hood, the carmaker dropped just a few engines, which were considered most suitable for the CrossTouran. They were either three turbocharged gasoline units or three turbo-diesels.
