Volkswagen introduced a rag-top version of the Golf’s sixth generation in 2011, but it took another year to unveil its GTI version.

Most hot hatches from the market didn’t have an open-top version due to low demand for them. On the other hand, Volkswagen used the already-developed platforms to create a convertible GTI version. Thus, it lowered the development costs. But it was more than just installing a powerful engine into a mundane Golf VI Cabrio.

From the outside, the GTI version sported a different body kit than its siblings. At the front, it carried over the headlights with the dotted LEDs inside from the regular GTI. In addition, the lower bumper featured a wide air intake in the middle flanked by three-slots side scoops that hosted the fog lamps. Another significant improvement was visible from its profile, where the standard 17″ light-alloy wheels with a unique design adorned the car’s look. Moreover, the modified suspension dropped the vehicle by 22 mm (0.9″) at the front and 15 (0.6″) at the back, thus lowering the center of gravity. Out back, the automaker added dual exhaust pipes placed on the sides of the rear diffuser.

Inside, the GTI Convertible received a pair of standard sports seats at the front and a bench profiled for two in the back. In addition, the “tartan” fabric upholstery resembled the GTI’s first generation. The leather-wrapped interior was available as an option. Last but not least, the seatbacks of the front seats were adorned with GTI lettering.

But the most significant part of the GTI was under the hood, where the turbocharged four-banger engine provided 210PS and 206 lb-ft (280 Nm) of peak torque from 1,700 to 5,300 rpm. Power went to the front wheels only via an electronically controlled differential.
