The French automaker had a difficult job when it launched the 208 in 2012, which came after the best-selling car in Europe, the Peugeot 207.

But peeps from the marketing team were not very satisfied with producing just another supermini, so they offered the XY version, which aimed directly at premium brands. Not that there were too many premium vehicles in the supermini segment, but the MINI was more than enough. Suddenly, Peugeot thought it could compete with the British brand with this upscale version of the 208.

At first sight, the overall design of the XY resembled the sporty 208 GTi. However, from a distance, it was difficult to see which was what. Furthermore, the front fascia sported the same headlights and fog lamps. Yet, the chromed grille didn’t sport the same three-dimensional pattern as its sportiest sibling. In addition, on the sides, the car sat on 17″ light-alloy wheels fitted as standard. Moreover, the car had wider front and rear tracks than the standard 208. Last but not least, it was available only as a three-door hatchback.

Inside, the XY didn’t provide the same sporty feeling as the Gti since it was more oriented towards a luxurious environment. Peugeot filled the cabin with LED lights, a seven-inch touchscreen placed atop the center stack, and leather seats. The instrument cluster featured the same design with a pair of big dials flanking a TFT color display. But some bean counters in the office didn’t approve higher quality plastics on the dashboard, center stack, and center console.
