    Vehicle Overview

Lincoln was on the verge of reinventing itself as a brand, and after it launched the second generation of the MKZ sedan, it continued its work with a new compact luxury crossover based on the Ford Kuga platform.

With a huge increase in demand for luxury compact crossovers, it was obvious for Lincoln that it had to have something in that segment if it wanted to replenish its budget after some failed experiments, such as the Mark LT luxury pickup truck. As a result, it unveiled the MKC as a concept car in 2013 at the North American International Auto Show. Due to the public’s reactions, Ford greenlighted the project. By the summer of 2014, the compact luxury crossover had already reached dealerships across the U.S. Since the vehicle was based on Ford’s Global C platform shared with the Kuga and the Escape, that wasn’t difficult. It was more challenging for the design team, which burned the midnight oil, to create a luxurious enough vehicle to bear the Lincoln badge.

At the front, the 2015 Lincoln MKC boasted the new twin-wing grille design language unveiled for the first time on the 2013 MKZ. Its ascending chromed slats were continued by the swept-back headlights featuring corner-mounted turn signals. On the lower bumper, the design team installed a center air intake flanked by a pair of side scoops that housed the LED daytime running lights. However, the automaker tried to create a more rugged look for the vehicle by adding a skid-plate-like aluminum trim under the bumper.

From its profile, the crossover’s ground clearance was emphasized by the black lower side sills adorned by chromed slats. In addition, the door mirrors sported LED turn signal lamps, which also improved safety. Lincoln also focused on details, so instead of using the same door panels as its Ford-badged siblings, it created new ones with carved lines on the upper area that continued to the rear quarter panels. At the back, Lincoln created a unique look for the tailgate, crossed by the broad LED taillights that underlined the Lincoln name. Lower, below the bumper, the automaker placed a second aluminum-looking shield flanked by oval-shaped exhausts.

Inside, the car manufacturer had to rely on more parts carried over from Ford to lower production costs. However, the fit and finish were appropriate for an upscale vehicle. Its real wood grains and silver trims adorned the dashboard, creating a luxurious look. A set of high-mounted seats with mild-bolstered areas was at the front. They were separated by a center console with an armrest and two cup holders. The transmission could be engaged via five buttons placed on the left side of the center stack. In the back, the automaker installed a split-folding bench seat that could accommodate up to three occupants. To further enhance the luxurious feel of the car, Lincoln added a panoramic glass roof.

Under the hood, the 2015 Lincoln MKC was available with a choice of two inline-four gasoline engines, both turbocharged. They were paired as standard with six-speed transmissions that sent the power to the front or in all corners, depending on the options. Another significant upgrade was the use of the CDC (continuous damping control) system, which ensured smooth rides while preserving the crossover’s ability to stay flat during cornering.
