With a super-mini sized hatchback on the market and a younger generation in its sight, Hyundai launched the i20 Coupe in 2015. It wasn’t exactly a coupe. It was a 3-door hatchback.

Hyundai designed the 2015 i20 in Europe and, right from the start, the team knew that there will be a 5- and a 3-door version. The car was not in the compact segment, where the i30 already was active. The i20 main rivals were the Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta, and Volkswagen Polo.

The outside design wasn’t like an i20 who just lost its rear doors. The raked A-, B-, and C-pillars were different from the five-door model, providing the Coupe with a more dynamic profile. At the front, the i20 Coupe took a different approach to the brand’s characteristic grille design. The reverse hexagonal mesh was in a new front bumper. The rear wheel bold arches led into a new rear bumper design which creates an athletic presence. To enhance the sporty design, a new roof-spoiler and specific 17” light-alloy wheels were installed.

Inside, there was the same design for the dashboard and the instruments. There was some required modification to the front seats so they can slide and lean forward to provide access to the rear seats.

The engine choices included diesel and gasoline units with power ranging from 84 to 100 hp. The front McPherson suspension was paired in the back with a semi-independent type.
