Skoda introduced the Scala lineup in 2018 to fill the gap between the Fabia and the Octavia models it had in its lineup, a hatchback that got more attention from those looking for an affordable, family-oriented vehicle.

The Czech automaker introduced the Scala in the dominant C-segment of the European market, competing against much more famous vehicles such as the Ford Focus or the Opel/Vauxhall Astra. In addition, since it shared its MQB A0 platform with the Volkswagen Polo and the Skoda Kamiq, it wasn’t expensive to build. The car was unveiled in late 2018, but sales started in mid-2019, which affected sales. But still, the vehicle had its contribution to the carmaker’s lineup, helping it when the world faced the pandemic in 2020-2021.

Skoda’s design team used the cubist design language when it penned the Scala. As a result, the car boasted a set of angular headlights with sharp edges and narrower inner sides. Customers could have these with LED lights, while the standard version featured halogen lamps. The angular-shaped grille was crossed by fourteen vertical slats and was surrounded by a chromed rim. A set of fog lamps was available on the lower bumper, flanking an apron that sported a honeycomb mesh grille and a lip spoiler. In addition, a set of functional air inlets created an air curtain around the front wheels.

From its profile, the five-door hatchback had some design elements that resembled the Octavia, with its sculptured door panels and the ascending belt line. Skoda offered the car with chromed or black trims around the window line and a lower skirt that enhanced the car’s aerodynamics. At the back, the raked forward tailgate created a sporty look for the vehicle, while a roof spoiler that also comprised the LED third brake light adorned it. The vast and sharp taillights emerged from the rear quarter panels onto the tailgate. Underneath, the automaker added a bumper with a lower trim mimicking a twin exhaust.

Skoda was known for creating affordable and well-built products, and the Scala fit into this description. Its interior materials were of above-average quality, with just a few hard-plastic trims in the cabin. The front occupants could enjoy the bolstered, comfortable seats. A wide center console divided them and housed the gear stick or the gear selector, a few buttons that controlled several safety systems, and an armrest with cubby storage underneath it. At the same time, the rear passengers could enjoy the wide cabin on a split-folding (60/40) bench seat made for three adults.

Under the hood, the automaker installed a wide choice of diesel and gasoline units paired with either a manual or an automatic (dual-clutch) transmission. Power ranged between a mere 95 PS (94 hp) and 150 PS (148 hp) that were sent to the front wheels exclusively.
