Subaru updated the fifth generation of the Impreza in 2019 for the 2020 model year in both body versions: the sedan and the hatchback.

Thanks to its improved design, the 2020 model-year Impreza sedan managed to get more attention from customers, especially in those terrible years of the pandemic when people were locked down in their homes, and the demand for new vehicles was low. Yet, the Japanese automaker had to keep moving the assembly lines.

Thanks to its better design, the Impreza was no longer that vehicle suitable for everything but with an uninspired look. Moreover, the 2020 model-year, came on the market with a redesigned front fascia. Thus, the lower side of the bumper received a broad grille that stretched from side to side. In addition, the side scoops used for the fog lamps got lower chromed-satin trims. Previously, those slats were positioned on the upper area of the side scoops. From its profile, the four-door version featured a sloped-down rear windscreen and a short rear deck. Depending on the trim level, the trunk lid was adorned with a spoiler.

Inside, the 2020 Impreza received a standard 6.5″ Subaru Starlink infotainment system with an option for an 8″ touchscreen. In addition, the car also got the Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist Technology that included Automatic Pre-Collision Braking and Throttle Management, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure, and Sway Warning, as well as Lead Vehicle Start Alert. This feature was standard on all vehicles fitted with the Lineartronic CVT.

Underneath the hood, the most significant upgrade was the introduction of the e-Boxer, which included a 12.5 kW motor paired with the 2.0-liter engine. In addition, the Lineartronic CVT offered an option to change seven fixed-gear ratios manually.
