    Vehicle Overview

BMW released in the summer of 2024 the 2025 M5 Touring as the most potent, all-wheel-drive hybrid station wagon in its history that could tick all the boxes for a family vehicle and a part-time racer as well.

The German automaker launched the first generation of the M5 in 1984 as a sedan-only affair, the E28. Then, in 1992, for the second generation of the M5, the E34, the car manufacturer expanded the range and introduced the station wagon version of it. While it wasn’t highly successful, it was a promising start. Then, in 2007, the second M5 Touring, known as the E61, appeared. Even though it counted for about 5% of the M5’s sales, it was still remembered. After that, BMW took a deep breath and skipped this family-oriented go-fast station wagon from its lineup until 2024 when the first plug-in hybrid M5 Touring broke cover, promising to be an all-round vehicle fit for everything a family, and the one behind the wheel, needed. The car shared its underpinnings with its G90 Sedan sibling and sported the internal factory code G99.

However, the 2025 BMW M5 Touring shared more than its underpinnings with its sedan sibling. It also had the same front fascia featuring an M-specific front end with a kidney grille finished in high-gloss black and almost completely closed. Its M5 badge was displayed on the horizontal M double-bar. On the lower side of the bumper, in the apron, BMW placed a broad air intake flanked by angular-shaped side scoops needed to cool the front brakes. Even though it shared many parts with the regular 5 Series Touring (the G61), it was 75 mm (3 inches) wider at the front due to the enlarged fenders.

BMW took the station wagon bodywork of a regular 5 Series Touring (the G61) and then enhanced it with M-specific details. Its door mirrors feature aerodynamic stalks and carbon fiber caps. The flush door handles matched the vehicle’s color, and the sculptured doors, with their ascending creased line on the lower side, made the station wagon look fast. Furthermore, with its slightly sloped-down roofline and the darkened pillars, the 2025 BMW M5 Touring had all the necessary elements to convince customers that it was an excellent family vehicle while it didn’t look boring. Out back, the automaker added a longer roof spoiler than on the regular Touring and a rear bumper fitted with four exhausts that flanked a massive diffuser.

Inside, customers were greeted by the curved screen placed atop the dashboard as in the rest of the 5 Series range. However, BMW made some changes to the menus and offered M-oriented sub-menus that allowed customers to release all the model’s power and performance. A set of bucket seats with high-bolstered areas was fitted as standard, while a pair of sports seats was on the options list. In the back, the automaker placed a 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat that could accommodate up to three adults. When lowered, the car achieved a total loading area of 1,630 liters (57.6 cu-ft.), which was more than enough for a family of four for a short vacation.

Under its skin, the 2025 BMW M5 Touring had the same technical details as its sibling. It featured a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine. It was helped by an electric motor, and the total output was 727 PS (717 hp), from which 129 PS (194 hp) came from an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic gearbox. All the oomph went in all corners for maximum grip. However, the M xDrive system allowed customers to send all the torque to the rear wheels only for high-speed operation or drifting. In the standard version, the car had a capped top speed of 250 kph (155 mph). Thanks to the M Driver Package, the station wagon could exceed that and reach up to 304 kph (189 mph).
